You are not welcome here, Vienna Austria 1999..........excerpt from an interview "coffee with an artstar" about this performance..... .....when i landed in vienna to attend a residency, it was right before the elections, and there was great fear that a man named haider would be voted into office. he was considered a racist, and people were afraid that foreigners would not be welcome in the country (among other things) if he won. so there i was, a foreigner, and i was moved to make a comment on that political situation. so for the "show" at the end of my residency, people were invited to an opening at the gallery, but when you got there, you were confronted by a brass plaque hanging over the gallery door engraved with the words 'you are not welcome here', and the doors to the gallery were locked. this angered some of the patrons (we secretly videotaped their reactions). the next day i did the performance where i walked around vienna in the dress with 40 foot sleeves, calling attention to myself as a foreigner....and you can be sure I had a lot of fear about doing THAT at the time! ::grin::
